Western Illinois University is going to quit funding its NPR station effective March 1.   Here is Tri States Public Radio’s coverage.

A new study reviewing what local media are producing shows a lot of isn’t necessarily local nor important.   The study from Duke University found of the stories sampled only 17% were truly local.

Neiman Lab spoke with the lead author and provided an overview.

When a poor person clicks on the web they may get ads for predatory job sites and predatory loans.    Nieman Labs reports that those with lower income aren’t getting quality news and information.

Journalists can learn a lot from “community organizers”.   That doesn’t mean you are becoming an activist.  The community journalism non-profit Free Press is out with a report which shows how newsrooms can use the strategies of the community organizers to find out how to better reach under-served parts of your town.  More  

Poynter has an interesting post on its web site.    It gathered a collection of tweets about reporters’ jobs before journalism. Those reporters tell about those early jobs’ impact on their current reporting.

American AM/FM listening is holding strong according to a recent study by Pew.  However, TV is getting hit by the web.  The latest comes in this story from Nieman Lab.

IBANewsroom launched in June.   An important study for newsrooms came out in May.  RTNDA released its annual salary survey. We revisit it in case you missed it. It showed an overall increase in pay in newsrooms.
