Tell It In YourWords

Teaching a class always refreshes my knowledge of news writing tips.   Sometimes quite simple.   There’s nothing like Merv Block’s suggestions to give you a refresher.   Here’s one from his book Writing Broadcast News (CQ Press):   Merv says when rewriting copy to tell it in your own words.   If you still take the time to rewrite wire copy (or any other copy), Merv says to avoid borrowing colorful language or an unusual combination of words. He says if we do borrow, a listener may recall hearing it elsewhere earlier.!

Use your own phrasing and words.
